The Dr. Jon Ver Halen Scholarship supports aspiring doctors who demonstrate academic excellence, compassion for patients, and a commitment to advancing the field of medicine. Established in honor of Dr. Ver Halen’s distinguished career, this $1,000 scholarship will be awarded annually to a pre-medical or medical student who embodies Dr. Ver Halen’s values of scholarship, service, and leadership. The Dr. Jon Ver Halen Scholarship supports students pursuing an MD, DO, DDS, DVM, or OD degree who demonstrate excellent academics, embodiment of Dr. Ver Halen's values, and financial need. Eligible applicants must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and be enrolled in an accredited U.S. medical school or pre-medical program. The scholarship aims to assist future physicians, dentists, optometrists, and veterinarians who share Dr. Ver Halen’s passion for compassionate, innovative patient care. Underrepresented minority students are especially encouraged to apply.
Dr. Jon Ver Halen is a board-certified plastic surgeon practicing in Dallas, Texas. He graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with dual bachelor’s degrees in biochemistry and English. Dr. Ver Halen went on to earn his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and complete his residency training at the University of Washington.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Ver Halen has been recognized for his surgical skills, commitment to research and education, and compassionate patient care. He has held faculty positions at leading institutions such as the University of Tennessee, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and Texas A&M.
Dr. Ver Halen has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and received numerous honors and awards, including the Patient’s Choice Award and the Excellence in Teaching Award. In his free time, he is actively involved with his church and local animal welfare groups.
The scholarship bearing Dr. Ver Halen’s name reflects his passion for nurturing the next generation of caring, dedicated physicians.
The Dr. Jon Ver Halen Scholarship is awarded annually to one exceptional pre-medical or medical student pursuing an MD, DO, DDS, DVM, or OD degree.
The $1,000 scholarship prize will be disbursed directly to the recipient’s medical school to assist with educational costs including tuition, fees, books, supplies, and living expenses.
